Simply the best TV show in years, “When Calls The Heart” is a wonderful series co-created by Michael Landon, Jr. and Brian Bird in partnership with best-selling author Janette Oke. If you are familiar with family programs like “Little House on the Prairie,” “Touched by an Angel,” and “Highway to Heaven,” and if you enjoyed the “Love Comes Softly” television movies, this series is for you. “When Calls The Heart” blends adventure, romance, wit, humor, and warmth against the background of a 1910 Pacific Northwest coal mining community.

I went shopping today for yoga outfits and I came home with about $150 worth of DVDs. No joke.
While shopping my mom suggested I get Frozen. So, it’s her fault really. lol.
I innocently went to the entertainment section of my local Wal-Mart. I figured I’d take a super quick look. Harmless, right?
Yeah, then I saw Robin Hood (2006/BBC) season one. Nearby was Sherlock – ALL THREE seasons! Then I saw Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, season 2 (which I needed). Then, I found The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
I debated for a few seconds on JUST getting Dr. Quinn since it was just $9.96.
Then I said, (softly out loud even!) “Ah, what the hell, I’ll buy them all.”
When I got home, I realized I hadn’t even looked for the one movie I was missing. Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones. I’m such a dork.
If you have not seen this show, When Calls The Heart (based on Janette Oke’s American West series) you need to. Seriously, it’s a great, wholesome, family entertaining show that is wonderfully written. The folks over at Hallmark Channel (Crown Media LLC), in conjunction with Michael Landon Jr., the same people who brought Janet Oke’s Love Comes Softly Saga to Hallmark Channel.
The show, if you are not aware of the plot, is based on a young teacher, Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), who comes west to teach in a mining town, Coal Valley. Little does she know the town was the victim of a horrible mining accident a few months before her arrival. She has to teach the children in the town’s saloon. The church was burnt down shortly after the mining accident so the only place large enough to house the school is the saloon. Along the way she encounters the towns-women, and a very annoying, yet handsome Mountie who has been sent to Coal Valley by a very influential man. Soon, sparks fly and the fun begins in Coal Valley.
The story has captured the hearts of the American pubic in this age of violence, extreme social media and monster/alien/vampire shows [though it should be noted I’m a sci-fi nerd and I do enjoy some of those shows]. The show had it’s season finale on March 31, 2014 and had very strong numbers. The fans of When Calls the Heart are known as The #Hearties. The website, http://www.heartieswcth.com is also tied to the Facebook page was created and the revolution began!
One of the [many] campaigns the Hearties created was a heart string. Erin Krakow, (Elizabeth Thatcher) posted a video near the end of the season showing a heart string and so we had the idea to send Hallmark our version. We created hearts, sent them to the administrators of the Facebook group, they were strung together and sent to Brian Bird, one of the writers of the show. Brian was gracious enough to share a video with the #Hearties when he received the package and rewarded us with some exclusive content and he also shared the hearts with the actors. Some of the strings were placed in the California Hallmark studios as well.
Daniel Lissing (Jack Thorton) was the first to recieve his. Erin posted on instagram her heartstrings, and Michael Landon Jr. posted his heartstrings on twitter as well.

On Saturday May 3rd, Daniel stirred the pot, asking a simple question on his Facebook page, “Guess what?!” Usually, it was our friend Brian Bird who would do this. Daniel learns quickly. Daniel’s two word Facebook post caused pandemonium, sort of. On Sunday, Brian Bird gave the Hearties a word scramble and it indicated there would be an announcement made Monday at 6am pst (9am est)
True to his word, early even, Brian, followed by Pam Slay (Hallmark Executive) made the official announcement of season 2 was given. It is a great feeling to have been apart [and continuing support] of the Hearties movement and be able to, I feel, to be part of the reason it was returned. The outpouring of love and at times, obsession over this spectacular show has paid off.
When Calls the Heart season 1 can be found on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video. You will not be sorry you checked out this TV Show. Come joint the Hearties once you watch or watch again.
